It can be more than difficult to brush a child’s hair if it’s tangled into knots, but add that they are tender-headed on top of that and it’s a task that is dreaded by both child and parent. Whether it’s just natural curly hair that knots itself no matter what or the child likes to twist and twirl their hair, there are some ideas to help make this task a little less traumatic for all involved.
Getting Out Knots in Hair
In the past, using a hair detangler spray usually found in local stores worked like a dream. Spray it on and the knots are slicked out while slowly brushing. Now it seems those are few and hard to find. Once found, most of them do the job but are so sticky that it causes further issues once the knots are out. Here is a great homemade way to create a detangler spray from household items.
Get a small empty spray bottle. Fill it with water and add a few drops of conditioner. This can be a baby conditioner or even an adult conditioner. Adult conditioners seem to work better though as their formulas are thicker. If the conditioner is scented, add enough to just barely catch a hint of the smell. Shake and mix and there it is; a detangler that is proven to work, cheap, easy to find, and without a sticky mess to deal with afterward.
The mixture can stay in the bottle for quite a while as the conditioner doesn’t go bad for quite some time. Just shake the bottle to mix the conditioner again before each use. Also, the one downside that has been noted is the child doesn’t like the cold water on the back of their neck. If they aren’t wearing a shirt, just drape a towel over their shoulders to cover them from the water.
How to Brush Hair without Pain
There are a few hints to help ease the brushing of hair, especially with tangles. Use the free hand to hold the hair and clamp it in between the thumb and fingers. Don’t pull on the scalp but gently hold it. This will help ease some of the discomforts felt when a tangle gets snagged by the brush or comb.
Start at the bottom and work up slowly. Never brush the hair from the top down. This will just combine the tangles into one big nest and make it harder to deal with and more painful to work out. Start at the bottom, separating tangles out by hand, and then use the brush or comb to smooth out the hair.
Types of Tools to Use for Brushing Sensitive Heads
For the tender-headed, fine combs and brushes are not a good idea. Look for wide combs where the teeth are spread out and the tips are not sharp. With the variety of brushes out there, again refining or shine-type brushes are too fine and sharp. Get a wider brush with rubber tips on the end of the teeth so that it won’t scratch the scalp.
Stay away from curling brushes. These are the brushes with teeth all the way around the brush that add lift, volume and curl to the hair. These are a nightmare for the tender-headed. If they get caught or wrapped up, the time it takes and the hair it pulls is not worth what the brush would do. Also, slick brushes will add more static to dry hair which increases tangles.
Another non-hair tool to use is distractions. Let them play at the sink with water, watch television or play with toys to help distract them from the tangled mess that has become their hair. Some distractions will work better than others so try a few things and see what works out the best.
Avoidance in the First Place can Help with Tangles
When dealing with a younger child who inevitably tangles his or her hair continuously, try to prevent the majority of the tangles. Either keep the hair shorter and easier to manage or pull the hair back into pony tails, pigtails etc. If the ends of that continue to get tangled, add braids to lessen the amount of hair they can get a hold of.
If they like to twist and twirl their hair as a comforting act, leave just a little out of the braid so they can still express that without causing enormous tangles. This will also help prevent them from wanting to take the hair ties out. They have cotton hair ties that work best as they can be tightened without the catching that rubber bands cause. Not to mention these are safer and more child friendly if put in their mouths.
Make Playing with Hair Fun and Enjoyable
Their hair will not always be such a pain to deal with. Make it fun for them. When it’s all done, make and express over how wonderful their hair is. If applicable, put clips or decor in the hair and make it even funner for the kids to appreciate. Making it fun will help them look forward to their hair being done rather than dreaded it. Try not to show dread. Children are incredibly perceptive. If the parent is dreading the chore to come, the children will sense that stress and express it in their own way. Stay calm, smile a lot, and talk to them. This is a stage and it will come to an end.
