DIY Personal Lubricant – Yep there is a recipe for that too

June 5, 2016 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

Okay, before the eye-rolls and cheeky comments start flying, let’s take a deep breath and remember—not everything is about kinky sex! Sure, that’s one reason someone might reach for a little extra glide, but for many of us, lubrication is a genuine necessity, not a novelty.

Let’s talk real life for a second. Whether you’re dealing with the hormonal shifts of perimenopause or menopause, recovering postpartum, managing medication side effects, or just feeling a little drier than usual (hello, stress and aging!), personal lubricant can make a huge difference in comfort, confidence, and connection.

And if you’re someone who’s too shy to toss a bottle into your shopping basket or you’ve ever stared at the pharmacy shelf feeling overwhelmed by labels you can’t pronounce—this is for you. You can make your own. Natural, gentle, and tailored to your body.

These DIY lubricants are made with skin-loving, body-safe ingredients that skip the synthetic junk and give you back control over what goes on and in your body. Whether you’re looking for something nourishing, plant-based, or just a backup for those unexpected moments, you’ll find a recipe here that fits your needs beautifully.

Let’s normalise the conversation, remove the stigma, and make space for comfort—because everyone deserves to feel good in their skin, however that looks.

Coconut Lubricant

DIY Vaginal Lubricant Recipe (Water-Based, Aloe + Glycerin Blend)
Safe, Soothing & Non-Irritating

Why this recipe works:
Many commercial lubricants contain ingredients that can irritate sensitive vaginal tissue—things like parabens, perfumes, and synthetic preservatives. This DIY version uses pure aloe vera and vegetable glycerin to create a smooth, hydrating, and skin-friendly lubricant that mimics your body’s natural moisture. It’s also condom-safe and pH-friendly for most people.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup pure aloe vera gel (look for 100% pure, no alcohol or fragrance)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin (food-grade or pharmaceutical grade)
  • 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum (natural thickener, optional but improves texture)
  • 5 drops vitamin E oil (optional – adds nourishment and shelf life)
  • Sterile container for storage (pump bottle or small jar)
  • Optional: 1 drop of lavender essential oil – ONLY if you know you’re not sensitive, and for external use only.

Instructions:

  1. Sanitize everything
Wash your hands, sanitize your tools and containers with boiling water or rubbing alcohol. This is super important for vaginal products.
  2. Mix the base
In a clean glass bowl, whisk together the aloe vera gel and vegetable glycerin until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Add xanthan gum
Slowly sprinkle in the xanthan gum while whisking vigorously. This will help thicken the mixture and prevent separation. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes to fully hydrate and gel.
  4. Add vitamin E oil
Stir in a few drops of vitamin E oil. This acts as a gentle preservative and adds skin-soothing benefits.
  5. Check the texture
If it’s too thick, add a teaspoon of distilled water. If too thin, add a pinch more xanthan gum and whisk again.
  6. Transfer to your container
Use a small funnel to pour the lubricant into a sterile pump or squeeze bottle.

Storage:

Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. This recipe doesn’t use strong preservatives, so treat it like fresh food. Always use clean hands or tools when scooping to prevent contamination.

To Use:

Apply a small amount externally or internally using clean fingers or a small applicator. Always patch test first if you’re prone to sensitivities.

Important Notes:

  • This is a water-based lubricant and safe for use with latex condoms and toys.
  • Do not substitute aloe vera juice for gel—it’s too watery and can increase risk of yeast imbalance.
  • Always check for irritation after use. If any itching, burning, or discomfort occurs, discontinue immediately.
