A total of 75 hand sanitizers have been banned by the US Food and Drug Administration due to methanol contamination. You should be extra careful with these brands because of the dangers that methanol can pose when absorbed by the skin. If swallowed it can lead to blindness, permanent neurological damage and death.
Many of the popular brands that are in use today, including Hello Kitty, All-Clean, CleanCare, Good Gel and Saniderm are part of this list. Hello Kitty was recalled on July 6 for the same issue, while the others that have been recalled are more recent. All these recalls are for methanol contamination.
