DIY Easy Dog Shampoo

April 4, 2023 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

As a pet owner, you want your furry friend to be healthy and happy, and a shiny coat is a good sign of their well-being. However, using commercial dog shampoos can be expensive and may contain harsh chemicals that can irritate your dog’s skin. This is especially true for dogs with thick, curly coats that require frequent grooming, like my labradoodle Aloo.

That’s why making your own dog shampoo is a great idea. Not only is it cost-effective, but it also allows you to control the ingredients and avoid harsh chemicals. With just a few simple ingredients that you probably already have at home, you can make a gentle, conditioning shampoo that will leave your dog’s coat soft, shiny, and healthy.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of making your own DIY dog shampoo. We will share with you some of the best ingredients to use and some tips on how to customize the shampoo to your dog’s specific needs. Whether your dog has sensitive skin or needs extra conditioning, we have got you covered. So why not give it a try and pamper your furry friend with a luxurious and natural shampoo that will leave their coat looking and feeling great?

Ingredients:

1/2 cup liquid castile soap
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup coconut oil
10 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

In a bowl, mix together the liquid castile soap and apple cider vinegar. Melt the coconut oil in a small pot over low heat. Once melted, add the coconut oil to the soap and vinegar mixture and stir well.

Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil to the mixture and stir well. Transfer the mixture to a clean, empty bottle with a lid.

To use the shampoo, wet your dog’s coat with warm water and apply a small amount of the shampoo. Massage the shampoo into your dog’s coat, making sure to avoid the eyes and ears. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and towel dry your dog.

Benefits of this shampoo

Gentle and non-toxic: The ingredients used in this shampoo are gentle and non-toxic, making it safe for dogs of all breeds and sizes. You won’t have to worry about harsh chemicals that can irritate your dog’s skin or cause allergic reactions.

Moisturizes and conditions: Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer that helps to nourish and condition your dog’s coat, leaving it soft and shiny. The apple cider vinegar helps to restore the natural pH balance of your dog’s skin, while the lavender essential oil has a calming effect on your dog.

Cost-effective: Making your own dog shampoo is much more cost-effective than buying commercial products. With just a few ingredients, you can make a large amount of shampoo that will last you several washes.

In conclusion, this DIY conditioning dog shampoo is a great way to take care of your furry friend’s skin and coat without spending a lot of money or exposing them to harmful chemicals. Plus, the lavender essential oil will leave your dog smelling fresh and clean. Give it a try and see the difference it makes in your dog’s coat!

While essential oils can offer many benefits for humans, it’s important to note that not all essential oils are safe for pets. Some essential oils can be toxic or cause allergic reactions in dogs, cats, and other animals, especially if used improperly or in high doses.

That being said, there are some essential oils that are generally considered safe for pets, as long as they are diluted properly and used in moderation. These include:

Lavender: This gentle oil can have a calming and soothing effect on dogs, and may help with anxiety, stress, and skin irritations.

Chamomile: Another calming oil, chamomile can be helpful for dogs who are nervous or have skin allergies.

Frankincense: This oil has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to promote relaxation and balance in dogs.

Cedarwood: This woodsy oil can help repel fleas and ticks, and may also have a calming effect on dogs.

Peppermint: When diluted properly, peppermint oil can be used to relieve nausea, promote digestion, and freshen breath.

It’s important to note that some pets may be more sensitive to certain essential oils than others, so it’s always best to start with a small amount and observe any reactions. Additionally, essential oils should never be applied directly to a pet’s skin, ingested, or used near their eyes or nose. They should also be kept out of reach of pets, as some oils can be toxic if ingested in large amounts.

When using essential oils on or around pets, it’s recommended to consult with a veterinarian or a professional aromatherapist who has experience with animal aromatherapy.
