Cleaning the toilet is one of those jobs I just hate. Sure its easy enough but it’s totally gross too. Use Essential oils to create these Bath Bomb style Toilet blocks. Maria SSelf shares her simple Toilet Block recipe.

Do-It-Yourself cleaners are not the hard-to-make, expensive or ineffective options we used to know. While these options are not available in a wide range of fruit or flower fragrances, they will leave your house smelling fresh and clean.

Advantages of Making Your Own Cleaning Supplies

People may not want to take the time to make their own cleaners, fearing that household items may not disinfect or polish as well as a commercial brand. Another concern may be that buying large amounts of the basic ingredients would cost more than buying one container of an all-purpose cleaner.

By not including artificial fragrances or heavy perfumes, you are not only providing some relief to people with allergies, but you’re reducing the number of hazardous chemicals that are released into the air and water.

Commercial Household Cleaners and VOCs

Many cleaning agents yield high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and terpenes that can react with ozone to form secondary pollutants including formaldehyde.

Ammonia, chlorine, formaldehyde, ketones, hydrocarbons, hydrochloric acid, phenols, phosphates, and trichloroethylene are all found in various forms in the average household cleanser.

Trichloroethylene, a chemical found in carpet cleaners, glass and floor polish, was found to cause fetal development disorders and birth defects.

According to the New Chemicals Program under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, only a small fraction of the more than 80,000 registered chemicals have been tested for human health concerns. All the more reason to make your own household cleaner, using items found in your pantry.

After years of making these, I have updated this post to include my own recipe.

DIY Toilet Cleaning Blocks Tablets or Bombs

Toilet cleaning can be a tedious task, but it is essential to maintain a clean and hygienic bathroom. To make the process more manageable, toilet cleaning tabs are a convenient option. These small tablets can be dropped into the toilet tank, and as the water is released into the bowl, the cleaning agents are released as well. But, did you know that you can easily make your own toilet cleaning tabs at home? Not only are they budget-friendly, but they also avoid harsh chemicals found in many store-bought versions.

This article will show you how to make your toilet cleaning tablets using simple, natural ingredients.

Ingredients:

1 cup of baking soda
1/4 cup of citric acid
1/4 cup of cornstarch
10-15 drops of essential oil (optional, for fragrance)
Spray bottle filled with water
Instructions:

In a mixing bowl, combine the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch. Stir until well blended.

If desired, add 10-15 drops of essential oil for fragrance. Some options include lemon, lavender, or tea tree oil I prefer adding a product called Nilodor but I add it after I have made them, as it’s pretty strong. I just add drop once they are set.  I also use this concentrate in a bottle of spray water for spritzing the house.

Slowly add water to the mixture using a spray bottle, stirring as you go. You want to add just enough water to form a dough-like consistency.

Once the mixture is well combined, use your hands to roll it into small balls, about the size of a golf ball. Press each ball flat to form a tab.

Allow the tabs to dry overnight.

Once the tabs are dry, simply drop one into the toilet tank and let it work its magic. As the water is released into the bowl, the cleaning agents are released as well, leaving your toilet sparkling clean.

It is recommended to replace the tabs every 2-3 weeks or as needed.

By making your own toilet cleaning tabs, you can save money and avoid harsh chemicals. Plus, you can customize the fragrance to your liking with essential oils. Give this simple recipe a try, and enjoy a cleaner, fresher-smelling toilet.

Once dry, place one in your toilet bowl, and the fizzy action will start as soon as it comes in contact with water, cleaning your toilet bowl.

Do toilet cleaning bombs work?
Toilet cleaning bombs can be effective in cleaning and deodorizing the toilet bowl. The fizzy action helps to remove stains and grime, and the ingredients used, such as baking soda, citric acid, and white vinegar, can sanitize and freshen the toilet bowl. However, it’s important to note that the effectiveness of these homemade cleaning bombs may vary depending on the level of grime and buildup in your toilet bowl. Additionally, they may not be as effective as commercial toilet cleaning products. It may be beneficial to use these bombs in combination with regular toilet cleaning methods for best results.

To avoid toilet stains, you can implement the following practices:

Regular cleaning: Clean your toilet regularly to prevent buildup and staining. A weekly scrub with a toilet brush and cleaner should suffice.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Harsh chemicals like bleach can cause discoloration over time. Opt for natural or mild cleaning solutions instead.

Use a toilet cleaner tablet: Toilet cleaner tablets can help keep your toilet bowl clean and prevent stains between deep cleanings. Simply drop one in the bowl and let it do the work.

Wipe up spills immediately: If you spill something in the toilet, wipe it up immediately to prevent it from staining.

Don’t flush inappropriate items: To avoid clogs and buildup, don’t flush anything other than toilet paper and human waste down the toilet.

Remove hard water buildup: If you have hard water, it can cause buildup in your toilet that can lead to staining. Use a hard water stain remover or a solution of equal parts vinegar and baking soda to remove the buildup.

Use a toilet bowl protectant: Toilet bowl protectants are designed to create a barrier between the bowl and potential stains. Simply apply it to the inside of the bowl and let it do the work.

By following these tips, you can keep your toilet looking and smelling fresh and avoid unsightly stains.
