8 Recipes For DIY Insect Mosquito Repellent

June 30, 2015 by Larissa Coleman Leave a Comment

Most of us love the warm Summer evenings, but along with the warmer temperatures comes an increase in the bugs outside.  Take a minute to protect yourself from insect bites by using the appropriate repellent, and these 8 recipes are not only cost-effective, but safe to use and all-natural.  No more worrying about the harm of chemicals on your skin or that of your little ones.

Lavender oil is one of my favorite ways to deter bugs and for an outdoor bbq, I use rosemary oil, as it doesn’t take away the yummy bbq smells. Rosemary and bbq smell go together.

We recently purchase a house near the beach and the midgies on the coast are terrible, I was able to revert back to this article and made sure that myself and our guests had plenty of options for a midgie deterrent that I could make myself using items I already had in the home.  If you have a problem with flies check out these Fly fans  We use them inside too, sometimes the flys are faster than the kids getting to the evening meal and this is a great way to protect their food.

With the arrival of the Japanese Encephalitis Mosquito, it has become important to make sure those pesky mosquitos are not snacking on you.  Japanese encephalitis symptoms include Headache, neck pain, and Nausea. .  Japanese encephalitis does have a vaccine and you should contact your local medical professional for information on obtaining this vaccination.

But how else can you protect yourself against mosquitos? Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks, you can even wear a mosquito net hat.  Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to cover gaps in your clothing where mosquitoes can get to your skin.  For a natural repellent use essential oils for making your own Mosquito bug spray repellent. Add oils to water and spray into the air or add small drops to your clothing.  Use a Necklace or Bracelet oil diffuser to help repel mosquitoes naturally.  Insect bracelets and necklaces are great for children too.

Here’s a recipe for a DIY anti-itch cream:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup shea butter
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup beeswax pellets
2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops tea tree essential oil
Instructions:

In a double boiler, melt the shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax pellets together over low heat.
Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
Stir in the aloe vera gel and essential oils.
Transfer the mixture to a clean, sterilized jar and let it cool completely before using.
To use:
Apply a small amount of the anti-itch cream to the affected area and gently massage in. Reapply as needed.

The shea butter and coconut oil provide moisturizing benefits, while the beeswax helps to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier on the skin. Aloe vera gel helps to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation, while lavender essential oil has a calming effect and helps to reduce itching. Peppermint essential oil has a cooling effect that can help to relieve itching, while tea tree essential oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help to prevent infections.
