If your lips are constantly dry, flaky, or just need a bit of love—this DIY hemp and honey lip balm is your new go-to. It’s rich, nourishing, and a total lip-saver, especially during those dry winter months or sun-soaked days.
I first made this after my teen borrowed (and lost!) my favourite store-bought balm on a school camp. And honestly? I haven’t looked back. This homemade version outperforms anything I’ve bought, and the combo of hemp seed oil and raw honey gives it a soft glide with deep, lasting hydration.
Why Hemp Seed Oil?
Hemp seed oil is a cold-pressed, omega-rich oil that soothes and strengthens the skin’s natural barrier. For lips, that means less chapping, more healing. It’s lightweight, non-comedogenic, and packed with vitamin E and essential fatty acids that repair and protect. And no—it won’t get you high. This is skin-loving, totally legal hemp at its best.
The Healing Power of Honey
Honey is a natural humectant, which means it pulls moisture from the air and seals it in. It also has antibacterial properties—perfect if your lips are cracked or irritated. I recommend using raw, unprocessed honey for the best results. Manuka honey is even better if you want an extra healing boost.
DIY Hemp & Honey Lip Balm Recipe
Makes 5–6 small balm tins or tubes
Ingredients:
- 2 tsp hemp seed oil (cold-pressed, unrefined)
- 2 tsp raw honey
- 1 tbsp beeswax pellets (or grated beeswax)
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- Optional: 3–5 drops lavender, vanilla, or peppermint essential oil
Tip: Want it vegan? Swap beeswax for candelilla wax.
Instructions:
- Melt the base oils.
In a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over simmering water), add the beeswax, coconut oil, and hemp seed oil. Stir gently until everything is fully melted. - Add honey and essential oil.
Remove from heat and quickly stir in the honey and essential oil (if using). Honey doesn’t mix perfectly with oils, so stir well to combine as best as possible. - Pour into containers.
Working quickly, pour the warm mixture into lip balm tins or tubes. It’ll start to set within a few minutes, so don’t dawdle. - Cool & store.
Let the balms cool completely before capping. Store in a cool, dry spot. Shelf life is about 3–4 months.
Optional Add-Ins
Want to make it extra luxe? Here are some lovely additions:
- Vitamin E oil – 1 capsule (preservative + antioxidant)
- Rosehip oil – for mature or sun-damaged lips
- Tint – add a pinch of beetroot powder or cocoa for a kiss of colour
Best Times to Use
- After brushing your teeth (before bed!)
- Before heading out into wind or sun
- Under lipstick for a smooth base
- Any time your lips feel dry, tight, or irritated
Why Make Your Own Lip Balm?
Let’s be honest—commercial lip balms can be hit or miss. Many contain petroleum or synthetic fragrances that make dryness worse over time. This balm skips all the nasties and gives you total control over what goes on your skin (and in your mouth, let’s face it).
Plus, it’s incredibly giftable. I keep a stash of these in my handbag, bathroom drawer, and yes—even my teen’s backpack (lesson learned!).
