Diaper rash is one of those things you just know you’re going to end up having to deal with at some time after having a baby, even if it is a situation that I’m sure all of us would much rather avoid. Although it’s an inevitable part of being a parent, we can be prepared for when it does happen. Let’s dive in and talk about all things diaper rash cream, including how you can make your own, homemade diaper rash cream with easily sourced, natural ingredients.
Is Diaper Rash Cream Necessary?
We all know that diaper rash cream is definitely a necessity when the baby actually has a rash, but what about when no rash is present? Using diaper rash cream even when there is no rash present can help prevent a rash from forming by forming a barrier on the baby’s delicate skin. Having this skin barrier keeps any of baby’s feces or urine from touching the skin and if it can’t touch the skin, it can’t cause any irritation.
How to Make Diaper Rash Cream
Diaper rash cream is easy and simple to make at home with just a handful of natural ingredients and common household kitchen equipment. The recipe we’re giving you today is full of ingredients that will nourish and soothe a baby’s delicate skin. DIY Baby Diaper Rash Cream
½ oz beeswax
1/4 cup jojoba oil
1/4 cup sweet almond oil
4 drops Lavender essential oil
Make it Wow!
Infuse the sweet almond oil or jojoba oil with Calendula or Lavender before making the recipe
Calendula is a fantastic herb for soothing the skin and healing any skin irritations. If your baby is prone to diaper rash or is currently experiencing a diaper rash, the addition of calendula will add a lot to the diaper cream’s healing properties. If you choose to use lavender, you’ll be getting a double whammy of Lavender’s healing properties – you’ll get the benefits of both the essential oil AND the whole herb!
Recipe Directions
1. Add beeswax glass measuring cup and set into a pan of water and heat over medium-low heat until just melted – alternatively, you could use a double boiler for this if you have one =)
2. Once beeswax is completely melted, add in your jojoba and sweet almond oils and stir well to combine
3. Remove from heat.
4. Wait 1-3 minutes and then add your lavender essential oil – you should stir the mixture a couple of times while you’re waiting. Stir again after adding your essential oil.
5. Cap the mixture while it cools so essential oils do not evaporate.
How to Use:
Apply to baby’s diaper area at every diaper change, or as needed. This mixture could also be used on all of the baby’s skin if the baby is experiencing any kind of skin irritation or you find that the skin just needs a little extra nourishment. This is especially great to use during the cold, winter months when skin tends to dry out the most.
