Homemade Lemon And Orange Laundy Powder

January 9, 2024 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

Doing laundry is a necessary chore that is often dreaded. And while we may not be able to eliminate the task altogether, we can make it more pleasant with the use of essential oils. In this article, we will be exploring how to make a DIY lemon and orange essential oil laundry powder that not only smells amazing but is also cost-effective.

As a mother of two teenagers, I know firsthand the struggle of keeping up with the endless piles of laundry. It can be frustrating to spend so much money on laundry detergent, only for it to be gone within a few weeks. Making my own laundry powder has not only been a cost-effective solution but has also given me peace of mind knowing that I am not using harsh chemicals on my family’s clothes.

Why DIY is Cheaper
Making your own laundry powder is not only a fun and satisfying DIY project, but it is also an excellent way to save money. According to a study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American household spends approximately $645 per year on laundry and cleaning supplies. That’s a significant amount of money that could be better spent on other essentials.

Making your own laundry powder at home can cost as little as a few cents per load compared to the store-bought alternatives that can cost upwards of $0.25 per load. Not only is it cheaper, but you also have control over the ingredients, ensuring that you are not using harsh chemicals that can be harmful to your health and the environment.  Obviously once you commit to a recipe, you can buy the supplies in bulk and save even more money. I suggest small batching first to make sure you like to powder.

How to Make DIY Lemon and Orange Essential Oil Laundry Powder
Now that we’ve established the benefits of making your own laundry powder let’s get into the nitty-gritty of making this delightful laundry powder.

Ingredients:

1 cup of washing soda
1 cup of baking soda
1/2 cup of Epsom salt
1/2 cup of citric acid
1/4 cup of coarse salt
20 drops of lemon essential oil
20 drops of orange essential oil
Instructions:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the washing soda, baking soda, Epsom salt, citric acid, and coarse salt. Mix well to ensure that all ingredients are evenly distributed.
Add the lemon and orange essential oils to the dry mixture and mix well to distribute the oils evenly.
Transfer the mixture to an airtight container or jar and store in a cool, dry place.
How to Use:
Add 2 tablespoons of the laundry powder to your washing machine, and wash your clothes as usual.

Tips for Storing Your Laundry Powder
Storing your laundry powder correctly is essential to ensure that it lasts longer and retains its effectiveness. Here are some tips to keep in mind when storing your laundry powder:

Keep it in a cool, dry place: Moisture can cause the powder to clump, reducing its effectiveness. Store your laundry powder in a cool, dry place to prevent this from happening.
Use an airtight container: Oxygen can also cause the powder to lose its effectiveness. Use an airtight container to prevent oxygen from getting in and affecting the powder. Keep it away from direct sunlight: Sunlight can cause the powder to fade, reducing its effectiveness. Store your laundry powder in a dark place away from direct sunlight.

Making your own laundry powder is a simple and cost-effective solution that not only saves you money but also allows you to control the ingredients that come into contact with your family’s clothes. This DIY lemon and orange essential oil laundry powder is a fantastic way to add a delightful scent to your laundry while enjoying the benefits of essential oils. Give it a try and see the difference it can make in your laundry routine.
