Top 10 Uses for Castor Oil

July 28, 2021 by Shellie Wilson Leave a Comment

If you’ve been scrolling through beauty blogs or natural wellness groups lately, you may have noticed a humble old remedy making a big comeback: castor oil. Once known mainly as a laxative your grandmother swore by, this thick golden oil is now taking center stage in natural skincare, hair growth routines, and even DIY scar remedies.

In Sweden, the trend hit so big that pharmacies had queues of young women (and a few men!) lining up just to grab a bottle. Why? Because they’d seen before-and-after photos showing longer, thicker hair after just a few weeks of using castor oil.

But hair growth is only part of the story. Castor oil has antibacterial, cleansing, and healing properties that make it a true multitasker in your beauty cabinet. Today, I’ll walk you through seven tried-and-true uses for castor oil, starting with one of my absolute favorites: the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM).

1. Castor Oil for the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM)

If you’ve ever felt that cleansers strip your skin dry or that your pores just never feel fully clear, OCM will change the way you think about washing your face.

What is OCM?
The Oil Cleansing Method involves massaging your face with a blend of castor oil and another nourishing oil (like olive, jojoba, or sunflower). The idea may sound counter-intuitive—why put oil on oily skin? But it actually balances oil production, dissolves dirt and makeup, and leaves your complexion radiant and smooth.

How to blend your OCM oil:

  • Oily skin: equal parts castor oil and carrier oil
  • Normal/combination skin: 1 part castor oil to 2 parts carrier oil
  • Dry skin: 1 part castor oil to 3 parts carrier oil

Step-by-step OCM routine:

  1. Pour 1–2 tablespoons of your oil blend into your palm.
  2. Massage into your unwashed face for 5 minutes, letting it dissolve makeup and impurities.
  3. Soak a washcloth in very warm (not scalding) water, wring it out, and press it over your face. Leave for a minute until it cools.
  4. Repeat once or twice, then gently wipe your skin.
  5. Finish with a splash of cold water or toner to close pores.

You can use OCM daily, though most women find 2–3 times a week is enough. And don’t panic if you notice a small breakout in the first couple of weeks—that’s your skin purging toxins. Stick with it, and you’ll see smoother, clearer skin.

2. Natural Makeup Remover

If you’re short on time, castor oil also works beautifully as a quick makeup remover. Mix it with olive oil, apply to a cotton pad, and wipe away even waterproof mascara without stinging your eyes.

3. Hair Growth and Scalp Care

Want thicker, healthier hair? Massage castor oil into your scalp a couple of times a week. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before shampooing. It not only stimulates hair growth but also strengthens roots and prevents breakage. For easier application, mix it with lighter oils like coconut or argan.

Pro tip: To remove heavy oils, apply shampoo directly to dry hair before adding water. This helps break down the oil more effectively.

4. Darkening Hair Naturally

Over time, regular use of castor oil can make your hair appear slightly darker and shinier. It’s subtle, but if you’re looking to deepen your natural color without chemicals, this is a gentle way to do it.

5. Longer Lashes and Brows

Dreaming of fuller lashes and brows? Apply castor oil nightly with a clean mascara wand or cotton swab. Many women also use it to thicken sparse eyebrows or even beards. Just avoid getting it directly in your eyes.

6. Scar and Skin Healing

Thanks to its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, castor oil can be massaged into scars, stretch marks, and even minor burns or cuts. Over time, it helps soften scar tissue and supports skin regeneration.

7. Natural Wart and Mole Treatment

Another old-fashioned remedy that still works: apply a dab of castor oil to warts, moles, or age spots nightly. With patience, you may see them fade over several weeks or months.

Why Castor Oil Deserves a Place in Your Routine

From cleansing your face with the Oil Cleansing Method to encouraging lush hair growth and even softening scars, castor oil is one of the most versatile oils you can keep in your cupboard. It’s inexpensive, effective, and best of all—completely natural.

So next time you pass by the pharmacy or health shop, grab yourself a little bottle of this golden wonder. You might just find it becomes your new favorite one-ingredient beauty secret.
